My wallet had my driver’s license, social security card, and credit cards in it, yikes. I am going to cancel the credit cards, but it was really stupid of me to have the SS card in there. Are there any free internet sites that allow a person to monitor what accounts are made in a persons name? Any other helpful advice to make me worry about it less? Thanks.

Directly call each of the three credit bureaus to issue a freeze on your account. Stop at the DMV in your state and inform them as well. The only free site would be annualcreditreport.com and get your credit reports free from each of the 3 bureaus per year to monitor for any fraudulent activity.

The best thing to do is a pull a report from each of the bureaus every four months. Once the year is up, you can start over again from the first bureau and always have pretty current accuracy.

I’m hesitate about using any of the services that require you to pay. You can take care of any of the steps those companies normally would without having to pay.

As long as you’re proactive and get it taken care of, there shouldn’t be any problem or long term consequences.

You should never carry a lot of cards with you. Take only those cards which you are likely to use. When you receive renewed cards in place of your old ones, you should cut the older cards with scissors so that nobody can find out the number or name on it. You should write down the numbers of all your credit cards on a piece of paper, with the toll-free numbers for reporting lost card. When you find that a card is missing, contact your card issuer immediately and report the fact of loss. If you do not have credit card number with you, take out some old statement from where you can find that number. If you do not have the phone number to report such loss, you can find it out from the Internet. Contact your local police to report the loss. You should also tell them the precautions you have taken before contacting them. Report the loss to all the three main credit bureaus. You should contact them individually and request for a copy of your credit report to find out is there any fraudulent account on it. Usually credit bureaus will send you the copy free of charge. Place a fraud alert on your credit card. This security alert will remain for 90 days and it is usually free. It will alert the creditors for extending any credit on your name. You can extend this alert further if you feel so. Check the credit card statement carefully after reporting the loss. If you find any suspicious transaction, you should immediately report it to your card issuer and cancel the card. There are several agencies offering useful services when you lose your credit card. They will inform the card issuers on your behalf. This service is particularly useful if you lose your wallet containing several cards. By making one phone call, you will be able to report the loss to all the concern financial institutions. The small fee they charge is worth the service.

Remember to take these simple actions very quickly in order to get the protection to your finances and your identity.

I lost my entire wallet along with my own social security card and my 6 yr old sons social security card , my drivers license, and credit cards, I already cancelled all of my credit cards, but what should I do now that my social security cards and my drivers license are in someone’s possesion??? Usually nothing,

The companies I have worked for found suing any individual where fraud or card misuse resulted in zero returns so it became too expensive!

Random credit card scam/theft protection question?

Say I ‘lost’ my credit card when in reality, I let my friend borrow it. I tell him to go to Best Buy or something and by $2000 dollars worth of stuff. After he buys it, I call my credit card company and tell them I lost my card. They suspend my credit card immediately.

I don’t have to pay anything because I have credit card/theft protection. So basically Best Buy just lost $2000 dollars worth of stuff.

How does Credit Card companies and businesses prevent this type of scam from happening? And who ends up paying for the $2000 worth of merchandise?
No, please don’t tell me what I should or should not do because I’m not going to pull this scam. I’m just wondering how businesses prevent this from happening and how credit card companies can stay in business if a scam was as easy as this.
Again, the scam is NOT the important part! The scam is so you guys would understand my question. I’m trying to figure out how credit card companies work, now how to scam people. Please answer the question instead of commenting on other things.
