Question by Mya’s & Trent’s mom: A questionl about Identity theft.?
My ex bf tried to get a discover card in my name. I filed bankruptcy on the 18th and I was pulling up a credit report and saw an inquiry for discover financial. And it had His address and his phone number and he didn’t even get the place that I worked right on it for the employment. So, I have put a temporary credit alert on my credit and I did turn him in to the federal trade commission. They said to keep putting fraud alert protections on my credit. They said since he actually didn’t open an account that I didn’t need to make a police report. But i want to tell someone rather it be the police or sheriffs department. I t hink that he might have stole my birth certificate to, but I can’t prove that. I just want to know if I should go a head and tell the police or not. He is on parole for stealing from me. Can he still get introuble for an attempted identity theft or not.

Best answer:

Answer by michelob86
Yes. Check with the police. Attempted identity theft is a crime now in some states. Your state might not be. Here are some of the states that have passed legislation.

Start Identity Theft Protection, Beginning Today

One of the fastest growing high-tech crimes in the world today is identity theft. I this high-tech world, there are people who will try to hack computer systems and get your information so that for a limited time, they can “become you”. Since they are now “you” if they are successful, they open new credit card accounts in your name, charge them to the hilt, then seemingly disappear from the face of the planet. Meanwhile, the credit card companies come back to the REAL you to find out when you are going to start making payments on that leather furniture, that top-of-the-line computer system, and that 60 inch plasma TV.

It is not a pretty picture. Now keep in mind that the majority of online sites where you can purchase items and merchandise are not scams and they take every possible precaution to ensure that this does not happen to you. While identity theft is something to be very aware of, it should also not throw you into such a state of paranoia that you disallow any members of your family from purchasing anything online! And also worthy of noting are two things:

1. There are relatively simple steps you can take to prevent identity theft from happening to you.

2. Identity theft is NOT limited to just online transactions!

Effective identity theft protection is now a necessary part of doing business online of offline. Whether you’re online, on the phone or taking part in a business deal in a face-to-face arena, there are certain tips that you’ll need to remember in order to participate in a solid identity theft prevention plan. If you’ve ever used a credit card to order take-out food over the phone, you’re potentially leaving yourself wide open to identity theft.

One of the things you can do to help protect you against identity theft is to put passwords on your credit card, bank, and phone accounts. Call your phone company today and put a password on your account. You should also ask your phone company to put what is known as a “PIC Freeze” on your phone account. This means that they will require your express permission before they switch your long distance carrier to anything other than what it is right now. There is usually no charge for this service from your phone company.

Another thing you should do frequently, at least a few times a year is to review your credit report as frequently as possible. Get a copy of your credit report from each of the “Big Three” credit reporting bureaus and go over them with a fine tooth comb.

Whenever possible, use an actual credit card instead of an ATM debit of check card. It is much easier to NOT be assessed for fraudulent charges on a real credit card, whereas many people have reported difficulty in not being required to pay charges, even fraudulent charges, when using a debit card.

Always, always, always take the receipt at a restaurant when you pay for dinner with a credit card. Some people go to the extent of also writing down the server’s name on the credit card receipt, and then compare it against the amount shown on their credit card statement. This is a small step but could save you big time, as well as enabling authorities to catch a thief with the name of the server who last had possession of your credit card and was out of your sight for a period of time.

You know that junk mail you get almost every day? Much of it has your name and address, but sometimes it also contains very private information such as your date of birth and even your social security number. Don’t just throw that in the trash can – invest in an inexpensive shredder at an office supply store like Best Buy or Office Depot, and shred that junk mail. Many occurrences of identity theft have come as a result of thieves going through someone’s trash and discovering such information in the trash, with more than enough data readily visible to create a “temporary new you”.

Do not become too relaxed about identity theft in this electronic age. Take some simple and logical steps to protect your information to avoid becoming the next victim.

Question by who is #1?: Steps toward owning our identity?
Clearly we need greater protections for our identity, the one on paper and in databases. As it is now, Americans do not own our identity. This is a slightly different issue from identity theft. Keeping unauthorized persons from committing fraud with your identity is one thing but I’m talking about you OWNING your identity. The difference would be that anyone wanting access to your information would have to ask you first for permission.

I think a good place to start is your medical records. Thanks to National Socialist Health Care (insurance), government is in the process of confiscating your medical records, allegedly so they can be digitized but more importantly, they become government property and government decides what is done with them.

The reason our 4th amendment rights are ignored is because we fail to demand them and enforce it. Citizens (what the Supreme Court calls the “belligerent claimant in person”) are the enforcement clause for the Constitution.

Let’s start with the medical records since this is on people’s minds right now and then move on to all the other databases your info is stored and traded around. Someone with a better legal mind than mine needs to write a proposed Constitutional Amendment so we can get it circulating and try to get 35 States to approve it.

I want to own my identity. Don’t you?
Chris M; The Americans you refer to who don’t get it do not matter. Never have and never will. Only 5% of the public had anything to do with the American Revolution. As for avalanche, I happen to believe we are the mountain.

Best answer:

Answer by Chris M
One flaw: the majority of the America people do not know that we are the People in the the US constitution. They don’t know that we are the regulators of the government. And, unfortunately, the government has advanced their their powers in the legal and military sectors, to the point where any uprising from the people is a crime that is easily dealt with.

As for a your suggestion of a legal standoff with the government, I use the analogy of a avalanche and the skier, we are the skier, the “government’s removal of our rights through legal measures” is the avalanche. Get it?

Could 5% of today’s Americans overthrow the government? No.

How You Can Get The Best Possible Identity Theft Protection

You may ask yourself, “Why do I need identity theft protection?” If you’ve ever thrown away a receipt, lost a credit card, or received a questionable email asking for personal information, you are making yourself a victim of fraud, and a great candidate for identity theft protection.

How many promotional statements have you tossed that may have your mailing address and full name indicated right on them? Identity theft often doesn’t require much to leave you in a financial mess.

The question becomes, “What can the average person do to ensure that personal information is kept personal, and to guard against possible theft?” Here is a list of suggestions that will help you get the best possible identity theft protection.

Look at your credit reports. These reports contain the kind of information an identity thief is interested in, and the statistics that you should have a good understanding of, in terms of theft protection. The report shows what accounts you have and how you pay your bills.

The law allows you to obtain a free version of this report at least once a year. If an identity thief is operating with your information, this report will show it in some way.

Review the credit reports. Look for any benchmarks that would tell you of possible theft, like inquiries from companies you haven’t contacted, accounts you didn’t open, and debits on accounts that can’t be explained. Check to see that all personal information is correct and that an Identity Thief hasn’t tampered with it.

Review your financial statements. Look at your accounts and billing statements on a regular basis. Watch for any changes that seem odd, like debits that you can’t account for and other things that could be the sign of possible theft.

Many victims of identity theft are the last people to know about the situation. Identity theft protection only works if you put it into action before a situation can occur. Sometimes you may only discover you’ve been victimized when you are declined for a car loan or mortgage because of something negative on your credit report.

You may find out about credit cards you’ve never owned that were applied for by an identity thief through a phone call from a collection agency looking for money on unpaid debts. Investigate these occurrences with your bank as soon as you become aware of them to.

Knowing your own security vulnerabilities and how to protect yourself against identity theft are prime methods of its protection. In a world of online shopping and paper statements, it’s your best defense against having to deal with the fallout of a quick, easy crime many people are committing.

Identity theft prevention begins by and protecting your social security number from criminal hackers. But when companies you trust are lax in their security you become a victim because of their lack of security. www.IDTheftSecurity.com

Question by BS9999: Transunion/Equifax – Is there a way to remove the “Fraud Victim Flag” i Placed on my Credit File?
Back in 2004 i lost my SSN (or SIN for Canadian readers) and so i called Transunion and Equifax to report this. At the time they said they would put a fraud flag on my account so that if anyone tried to get credit the creditor would have to contact me by cell to confirm my identity before proceeding.

My question, is there a way to remove this Flag from my credit file becuase i dont need this extra protection anymore and i feel by having it on creditors become suspicious and limit what i can get. I havent contacted Trans/Equifax yet since they are closed now (wont open till monday).

Best answer:

Answer by judge5519
All you need to do is call them and explain the reason you want it removed and they will but as you said they are closed till Monday. Do it on Monday there is nothing to do till then

Question by Christine D: Has anyone had success getting a refund from idthecs?
This so-called company stole money right out of my bank account. They have never contacted me before – they got my bank information from a payday loan application. They are supposedly in the business of identity theft protection, but from where I’m sitting, it seems to be pretty ironic that they are in fact stealing my identity and money from me. Has anyone dealt with them? I have reported them to the BBB, and to Internet Fraud.

Best answer:

Answer by Jules
I also was a victim of this company Unfortunately they do have all your info. I filed a police report, Complaint with FTC and also with the FBI internet fraud division. I also contacted the bank . I hope this helps But as far as getting refunded i haven’t yet. I also chatted online with one of the associates fromwww.idthecs.com and Josh gave me the run around how I authorized autopay. This is all FRAUDULENT. I also submitted a report on WWW.RIPOFFREPORT.COM
